Vandergrift Police nab Gilpin man wanted in Wisconsin

A Gilpin man on the run from authorities in Wisconsin was arrested on Monday in Vandergrift.

According to Vandergrift police, James Schantz, 54, was apprehended at Route 56 and Pennsylvania Avenue, on suspicion of drunken driving.

Upon the arrest, Vandergrift police discovered that Schantz, who is living at 114 Sober Lane, Gilpin, had a warrant issued for his arrest in Chippewa County, Wis.

According to the Chippewa Sheriff's office, Schantz is wanted by the county on charges of substantial domestic battery from an incident that allegedly occurred in June.

Schantz had a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and was driving a Pontiac Grand Am with Wisconsin license plates at the time of his arrest, according to Vandergrift police.

Along with drunken driving, Schantz is charged with being a fugitive.

Schantz is in the Westmoreland County jail awaiting extradition to Wisconsin.
