A Vandergrift couple charged with selling illegal drugs in Delaware two weeks ago are now accused of beating a woman with a belt in the borough.

Arthur A. Torres, 34, and Desiree Woody, 22, both of 309 Longfellow St., Apt. C, were out on bond from a Wilmington, Del., jail on drug charges when Vandergrift police and Pennsylvania attorney general's agents arrested them for allegedly beating a woman and stealing her purse. Torres is accused of using Woody's belt to beat the woman in another apartment in the couple's apartment building.

Police say the assault happened on Monday, and they found the suspects on Tuesday.

The two are charged with theft and two counts of assault and conspiracy. They were taken to the Westmoreland County jail where they were arraigned via video on Wednesday by District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec.

The pair was being jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail each pending a preliminary hearing tentatively set for Tuesday.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident and evidence found when they arrested the two.

Police declined to comment but were obtaining a search warrant for another community.

Records also show Torres and Woody were arrested May 4 by Wilmington police and charged with cocaine possession, intent to deliver marijuana, maintaining a car to sell drugs, and conspiracy.
