A Vandergrift police officer avoided injury early Saturday after his cruiser collided with a car he was pursuing.

The Pittsburgh man being chased suffered a minor injury in the accident.

State police, who investigated the accident, said Vandergrift Officer Richard Gray, 40, attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Omar L. Moses at about 2:45 a.m. and the driver allegedly fled into Washington Township. The crash occurred at 2:51 a.m.

Police said Moses, 44, failed to negotiate a left curve at high speed along Route 66, just north of HIlltop Drive, but lost control. The Lincoln Mark VIII spun counterclockwise and Gray was unable to avoid hitting the front end of it and forcing it into several mailboxes before it stopped.

Moses fled the scene on foot, but caught a short time later in a wooded area behind Gail's Restaurant with the help of other local police departments.

He was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison.

State police said Moses faces charges of fleeing police, drug violations and numerous traffic violations.
